The start of a new term in January can always be a bit tricky for our after school photo club. The slightly cold and damp weather and the lack of light gives us extra challenges but also extra opportunities to teach the children how to create pictures using the light they have or by getting creative with artificial light.

Last week the assignment was to create pictures using torches and light wands to make light trails and ghosting in their photographs. They really got enthusiastic and found dark areas of their classrooms to practice waving the wands or torches in the air whilst the cameras were set to the fireworks mode which allowed them to literally draw with light whilst the shutter remained open. Our clever little Nikon Coolpix cameras do this very well and the children thoroughly enjoyed making their pictures in the dark!

Take a look at our Sharp Shooters work, we think they’re pretty awesome!

Connie’s clever ghosting picture was created by switching the torch off and on whilst the camera shutter was open!

James stood in front of his camera and waved the LED light wand around.

Ezra has been very creative by holding the light wand up to his face for a bit before moving it. By doing this he has created a ghostly image of himself disappearing in to a wave of light! Super work Ezra!

Louisa has created a fabulous image here by finding the darkest spot in the room where no other light can interfere with her picture. This allows the blue lights to really pop against the dark background!
