It was all about spooky photos at this week’s after school clubs!
Halloween is great for dressing up and trick or treating, but it also gives kids a great opportunity to get creative and think of ways to create spooky photographs in their school setting.
To inspire the kids, we started off the session by showing them some photographs of well known photographers like Alex Majoli, Bruno Barbey and Edward Steichen.
We asked the kids to bring their favourite halloween costume, and to think what might look scary in a photo. We encouraged them to work in couples or groups which works great for coming up with creative ideas but also teaches the kids how to direct their subjects. Halloween theme was also great for practicing skills we thought in after school clubs so far, like black and white photography, taking photographs from ant’s perspective, emphasising colour, playing hide and seek etc. The Nikon Coolpix W100 cameras we use for our photography clubs have some cool features like neon or cartoon effect which added extra drama and spookiness to the kids photos, as well as emphasising only one colour and making everything else black and white.
