Funded Photography Workshops for Crawley Schools
Sharp Shots Photo Club is launching a new Arts Council-funded programme delivering free, high-quality photography workshops for schoolchildren from underserved communities across Crawley District. Set within inspiring rural locations, the project will help young people build creative and technical photography skills, grow in confidence, and develop a deeper connection with the natural landscape.
Founded in 2015 by photographer and educator Lillian Spibey, Sharp Shots has over a decade of experience delivering photography education for children and young people. Led by Lillian’s 20+ years of industry and teaching experience, the organisation has successfully delivered projects including the Ridgeway 50 Project, Photographers Without Limits, Through the Natural Lens, and Luton Henge Access — creating opportunities for young people who may not otherwise have access to creative learning.
Lens on the Landscape will offer free one-day workshops for classes of up to 30 pupils, from primary (7–11) and secondary schools (11–18), across landscapes connected to the Weald to Waves project. Workshops will take place at Wakehurst Place, Knepp Estate and Gravetye Estate — locations selected for their natural beauty, ecological importance, and cultural heritage.
Sharp Shots will provide all photography equipment, including shockproof compact cameras for primary pupils and DSLRs for secondary students, as well as transport support where needed. Through hands-on sessions exploring camera techniques, composition, and light, participants will also be encouraged to engage with the landscape’s history, wildlife, and changing environment.
Each child will receive a printed photograph of their favourite image, while 20 selected photographs from participating schools will be exhibited at Crawley Museum, with pupils, families, schools, and the wider public invited to attend.
Using photography as a tool for creativity and self-expression, the project encourages young people to observe, interpret, and imagine the landscapes around them — including how they may change in the future. By removing barriers to participation through free access, equipment, and transport, Lens on the Landscape aims to nurture creativity, curiosity, confidence, and a lasting connection to the natural world.

Wakehurst Place
Our second workshop took place at the beautiful Wakehurst Place under glorious blue skies and soaring summer temperatures. Despite the heat climbing well into the 30s, our enthusiastic young photographers embraced the challenge with energy and creativity.
We began the day in the shaded woodland marquee, where everyone learned the fundamentals before setting off to explore the spectacular gardens and landscapes. Guided by our wonderful Wakehurst expert, Natasha, the group discovered hidden corners, fascinating wildlife and endless photographic opportunities, putting their new skills into practice in one of the UK’s most inspiring natural settings.

WORKSHOP 3 – 9th JULY
Wakehurst Place
Our third workshop was a return to the wonderful Wakehurst Place under more glorious blue skies and higher summer temperatures! Despite the heat climbing well into the 30s, our enthusiastic young photographers embraced the challenge with energy and creativity.

What the workshops include:
- An introduction to the science of photography, including camera mechanics and how to use camera settings effectively
- A look at the history of photography and the work of influential photographers
- Practical photography sessions built around the workshop theme, allowing pupils to apply their new skills and techniques throughout the day
- The opportunity for each child to select and print their favourite image from the workshop, which can also be used for follow-on class activities such as art or creative writing projects
- Insight and instruction relating to the nature, wildlife and history of the workshops location
What we provide:
- A Nikon or Kodak waterproof and shockproof camera for every child aged 7–11 (up to 30 pupils)
- DSLR or bridge cameras for students aged 11–18 (up to 30 pupils)
- DBS-checked professional photographers and workshop leaders
- Instant printouts of each child’s favourite photograph using portable mini printers
- Educational insight into the location’s nature, wildlife and history, often delivered by specialist guest speakers
- Experienced educators and photographers with extensive workshop experience
- A variety of engaging activities designed to create a fun, interactive and memorable learning experience
- Funding support for transport to the venue, where required.
Creative Photography Projects for Schools
At Sharp Shots, we believe photography is about far more than taking great pictures. Our workshops encourage children to slow down, observe their surroundings, think carefully about composition and express themselves creatively. These are valuable skills that support learning across the curriculum and continue to benefit pupils long after the workshop has ended.
Every funded photography workshop is tailored specifically to your school around a chosen theme. Previous workshop themes have included wildlife photography, local history, still life, action photography and documentary storytelling.
We also work in partnership with organisations across the UK to enrich the experience for participating schools, including National Trails, Wakehurst, Knepp Estate, National Trust, Weald to Waves, Royal Photographic Society, Revolution Arts and many others.
